Salinger, J. D.. The catcher in the rye. [1st ed. Boston: Little, Brown, 19511945. Print.

there are many social isues in the catcher in the rye. Even though I  have just recently started reading the novel, I notice there is this teenage boys that has a lot of problems with school life and personal life.  He has moved between 4 different schools within 2 years. He is very independant it seems. the book is called the catcher and the rye because he is addicted to alchohal. and underage drinking is a big problem in most a lot of cities as kids will somehow get possesion of alchohal and go to parties and drink large amounts.

Golding, William. Lord of the Flies. New York: Coward-McCann, 1962. Print.
The main character in my book is named Ralph, he is a teenager, 17 years old and in my opinion the three main traits he posseses are:
Humour- The quality of being funny. Synonyms-Fun, Amusement. Antonyms- Grief, Seriousness.
"The fat boy glanced over his shoulder, then leaned toward Ralph. He whispered.""they used to call me Piggy". "Ralph shrieked with laughter." "Piggy! Piggy!"  (Golding, 11)
Considering these boys are stranded on this unknown island, he keeps the spirits high with his down to earth, funny atitude.

Leadership- to guide a group of people or to take control of a situation. Synonyms- control, influence. Antonyms-

Wiesel, Elie. Night. Bantam ed. New York: Bantam Books, 1982. Print.

The first significant element in this story would have to be the setting.

"But we had reached a station. Those who were next to the windows told us its name. Auchwitz."

For anyone whos studied canadian history, they know that Auchwitz was among the most gruesom of camps the jews were situated in. Its the most commonly remembered camp and the fact that Elie escaped from it is extremely impressive and brave.

The second significant element in  this story would be the main character (who is also the actor). There is no specific quote that you can pinpoint as showing that. Just the whole book itself is an amazing read and even more soo that he survived the terrible slaughterings from the Germans. Even further, he wrote about his memories which takes a strong person to write about what went on throughout his time at the horrible camps.

In my opinion, the five main elements in the book lord of the flies is suspense, conflict, foreshadowing, curiousity, and goals. The most important element which makes gthe book exciting in my opinion would have to be foreshadowing. Then suspense, then curiousity, then conflict and finally goals. The reason that foreshadowing is so apealing to me is because they give you hints through the dialogue of the characters that something exciting is going to happen later on in the story which encourages the viewer to read on. In my current book lord of the flies, a large group of kids are trapped on an island, the book has identified the two leaders of these kiuds, Ralph and Jack. a side character who has not yet been named tells ralph this. "I saw the snake thing, the beastie, will it come back tonight?"
"there isnt a beastie!" (golding, 34)
This leads me to believe that eventually we will see this large snake thing later on during the story which has really encouraged me to continue to read the text!

There are many qualities that can make a book exciting and worth reading. For me, the 3 most important qualities are: Interesting main characters with good traits, a good problem which will make for and exciting solution, and created suspense which is always important in making an extremely exciting and awesome read. In the book im reading at the moment, Lord of the Flies has a very slow start. The characters that have been announced have some interesting traits about them. The 2 main characters Ralph and Jack appear to be very adventurous  which are interesting traits for main characters. Since the start has been extremely slow there hasnt been any suspense created yet. However a good problem has rose as these boys are trapped on an island because their plane crashed. So hopefully that will make for a great ending and solution.
